Transalpine on the L1 - from Garmisch to Brescia in 30 days (overview post)
(Info: this post will be updated continuously as the individual posts on the sections of the L1 are published).
You’ll hardly find a bigger adventure in Europe: crossing the Alps in around 30 days with nothing but a large backpack, the clothes on your back, and hiking poles. The route takes you from Garmisch-Partenkirchen across the impressive limestone mountains of the Zugspitze range, over the high-alpine main ridge of the Alps, and finally through the Adamello Alps to Brescia. What makes the L1 stand out is its unique solitude and comparatively good accessibility; only just under 50 people per year embark on this transalpine adventure.
I walked most of this route in the summer of 2024. This post serves as an overview, so you’ll find the links to the individual stage reports here in as clear and traceable a way as possible.
